Salineras, Maras, Moray half day
Departure from Hotel and ride to Moray
High up in the plateau of the Sacred Valley lies Moray, with the concentric circular terraces buit by the Incas using the geological depressions; the irrigation system and structure created different microclimates in every platform that allowed them to domesticate, climatize and hybridize vegetables, cereals and other plants for human consumption.
Then we go the "Salineras" (Salt works) located at 7 km from Moray, we pass by a typical Andean Village called Maras. The Salt works of Maras is northwest of the village.
Arrival in Maras salt works, see approximately 3000 small pans by an average area of approximately 5 m ², built on a side of the foothills of mountain "Qaqawiñay", the terraced shallow pools are filled up every 3 days with the salty mountain spring water located at the top of the pans, once the water evaporates, the salt remains and adds up in several refills, this process lasts for one month to get a considerable amount of solid salt, after harvesting is iodized, packed and sold in local markets.
